Why just 9 hours of coding class changed my whole outlook on technology – Philadelphia Business Journal

Source: m.bizjournals.com

I learned this lesson when learning how to do HTML coding 15 or so years ago, and when I couldn’t absorb Javascript in a day! While tools have been created in the last 15 years to make creating a website more user-friendly and accessible to the masses, the science and art behind it all continues to get more complicated. (Trust me–I know. I’m married to a web developer.)  I’m thinking that I need to do this with some other languages, like update to learn HTML5, more XML-related stuff, or relearn Javascript, or PHP, or…something! It really does give you an appreciation for what full-time coders do, and I’m sure that if I learned some more, perhaps API documentation-related stuff would become easier for me to learn as well.

Check out this article–good perspective.

Microsoft Skype Translator Preview: The real-world test

Our conversation was halting at first. Maria in the south of Spain would start to speak and I would reflexively respond, even though I didn’t understand what she was saying. Our…

This is really exciting to me! We are always looking for the next step in translation communications, and this might be that next step! Even with the demonstration here, you can see that it’s still not perfect, but it’s going in the right direction. I look forward to the day I can get an invitation for this so that I can not only use with with tech comm colleagues around the world, but also with my family around the world who speak English. Perhaps I’ll be able to have a more direct conversation with my in-laws–finally!

I find it interesting, if you read the text following the video, that while translation is not perfect just yet, there is an attempt to make this a smart program by localizing and cleaning up the English in the process, as an attempt to standardize the English into "clean English" or something that’s more neutral or international English. That can’t be easy to do!

Check out the video and read this article. This is an exciting new thing that I hope will become a vital part of better communications and help us work towards better content and better content strategy.

Mobile-Friendly Test

Source: www.google.com

I’m sure my site doesn’t, but that’s something I’ll have to correct in the near future. In the meantime, this is a Google Developers test you can use to test to see if your website is mobile-friendly. Thanks to Marta Rauch for passing this one along!

This is what it feels like to be unemployed for years

The term among economists for losing your job market value when you’re unemployed is “skill erosion.” Here’s what that feels like.

Source: www.vox.com

Craig Cardimon brought this article to my attention, and boy, it struck a STRONG chord with me.

Having been unemployed twice in the last 5 years, both times for about a year or so, everything in this article happened to me both times. It’s part of the fear that I face if I should find myself either unemployed or underemployed again in the future–I don’t want to have to go through this yet again. It almost feels like PTSD having experienced it not once, but twice in recent years.  You truly lose your self-confidence. It’s taken two years to get mine back.

This is one reason that I recommend to anyone who is job searching to stay active on social media, in order to continue being part of the conversation of topics going on in one’s field and learning the trends. I also recommend trying to find part-time jobs related to your field, not finding outside work outside of one’s field, so that way you can stay in the loop, and perhaps learn a new skill. Taking a course to brush up on a skill helps too.

This is an interesting article that I hope employers read, so they can better understand the impact of the economy. There are plenty of good workers out there that just haven’t been given a break, by no fault of their own, so it’s worth investing a little extra time to let them get back up to speed again.
